Do you Have a Social Media Strategy for Your Business?
If you have a business then the chances are you have some sort of social media presence. This may be in the form of a Facebook page or Twitter account that you set up ages ago and post on occasionally. This is your first problem! The key to social media is consistency. In fact I say key but it’s more like a bunch of keys. For some the sheer mention of the words social media can bring down a fog that makes you quickly find something else that needs doing. For others you probably do some of it, perhaps you are posting regularly but what are you posting, when are you posting and are you posting the right content? Even if you think you are doing everything right the chances are there is plenty more that you could be doing to make your social media efforts more effective. Let’s look at what a good social media strategy should involve.
Does Your Competition Have a Social Media Strategy?
This is critical to a good social media strategy. Analyse what your competitors are doing and make sure you are doing it better. If the competition is not doing it well this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be. Take inspiration from the industry leaders, look further afield and find those that have built a good social media following. It’s not all about the number of followers it’s the quality of the audience engagement.
Posting on the Right Platforms
Facebook is all you need right? Wrong! There are so many effective social media platforms that you could be using – the chances are you don’t need them all though. Perhaps you are a business to business establishment and your core client base are business owners themselves. Where are they active? For many Twitter and LinkedIn are massively under used. Are you making the most of the article facility on LinkedIn? If you have a very visual product then Instagram and Pinterest could hold the key to audience engagement.
What to Post and When
This for some is where it all falls down. You have social media pages and you post once or twice then it becomes too much of a chore with everything else you have to think about and the good intentions that you started with are all too soon forgotten. It is important to post consistently – daily, every other day. Not too much though – if you start posting every time you think of something you will quickly lose followers. I recommend posting once a day if possible. Post content that is relevant and engaging. This means not posting “its Friday, yay” or “what are you doing today?” The content has to add value to your audience and make them want to find out more. When to post is another quandry entirely but there are guidelines of the best times of day and the best days of the week. The key is consistency!
