While a large part of our business is operating a full social media management service for our clients, we are often asked to produce strategies for agencies that are looking after the digital requirements of a company or for businesses that want to do their own social media but just want some initial help and planning. A bespoke social media strategy involves analysing your business and what you offer, to come up with a strategy that will help you maximise your social media efforts. Within this process you should be looking for:
- The current social media set up – what pages and accounts you have and how they are set up
- Are you in the right place to reach your audience?
- Are your audience using the platforms you are using – is your business on the right platforms?
- What are your competitors doing and how is it working for them?
- What sort of content should you be posting, how often and when?
- How can you maximise the visibility and engagement of your social media efforts?
Of course, this is just the tips of the iceberg and a good social media consultant will be able to pull all of this information together and present it to you as a plan of how you should proceed.
Social Media Content
We are often asked to help clients with their content as part of our social media management services as they just don’t have the time, or the motivation, to keep thinking of new posts. There are clients who will happily create their own posts using tools like Canva. We do like to bang the Canva drum as it facilitates so much creativity when it comes to social media content. You can create product graphics, review graphics, or even just simply add a logo and text to a pre-determined size template for Instagram, Facebook, Stories etc.
If you are running out of ideas of what to post and need some input, you can look to a social media agency to pull together content to schedule for you. They will generally have lots of experience with the sort of posts that work, what creates a buzz, how to portray your products in the best light. We don’t operate a graphic design agency but do use tools to create a bank of posts for our clients and then, using a programme like Sprout Social or Hootsuite, we can schedule these posts for a month or two at a time.
Social Media Help and Advice
You might just need confirmation of what you are doing, to have someone assess your efforts and tell you how to improve, what to do more or less of and how to give that extra edge to your social media efforts. We are regularly approached by clients to just sense check what they do and to perhaps set up some test posts or create some content for a specific campaign. You don’t have to go all in with an agency to get some help and advice. If you just want to buy a few hours work to get you set up, this can be done.

When you are running a business, you are often too busy working ‘in’ your business to work ‘on’ your business. While you know that social media is really important, you have far too many things going on to think about it. Often a website designer doesn’t have the social media knowledge required for example or you can’t get an agency that can effectively manage your PPC. On top of this you need a graphic designer that can bring everything together.

If you find a well established one, they will often have contacts and relationships with others that offer reliable creative, web design and other marketing skills too. Choosing a social media agency that understands your business is key. You want them to be able to talk to your audience as if they are you, in a way that you would. You need them to be familiar with your products and service and to ensure that they are able to build a community with your audience. When you are choosing a company make sure they have the following:
- A good understanding of your business and what you are trying to achieve
- Examples of other clients they have worked with
- An understanding of the various social media platforms
- Reviews from other customers
- A clear and concise up front strategy before you make any commitments
- An agreed set of KPIs to measure performance from he start
- Creative solutions and the ability to think on behalf of your business when it comes to producing content
